Outer Banks Family Portraits | Corolla North Carolina | OBX Beach Portraits

Today we’re going to talk about something we don’t always like to bring up when it comes to Outer Banks beach portraits. RAIN!

What do you do if it rains the evening of your OBX family session?

The answer is simple! We almost always reschedule for the following morning OR if Friday evening is available we’ll bump you to then. We never call or cancel an OBX beach portrait unless it’s physically raining at the time of your outer banks family photography session. The weather on the Outer Banks changes constantly and we almost always can wait it out 10-15 minutes and it clears right up! Between Madeline and myself, we are generally both booked Monday through Thursday for Outer banks family photography. We try our very best to leave Friday’s open (unless we have a wedding) but 9 times out of 10, we’re bumping your group to the next morning. This is why it is so important to always hire a professional photographer for your outer banks beach portrait. With the sun sometimes being high and bright in the mornings, it an be tricky to shoot an outer banks family sessions on the beach! Luckily you’ve got us to get you covered! You’ll want to give yourself flexibility with in the week so that this is possible!

Below is a beautiful outer banks photography session we photographed in Corolla, NC this past summer. It was the perfect example of how we had to postpone their outer banks beach portrait evening time spot until the morning. The skies that morning in Corolla, NC were gray and beautiful with soft light. Perfect for OBX family photos!

Outer Banks Beach Portraits | Bringing Your Pets to the Beach | Outer Banks Family Photography

Today we’re talking about our favorite 4-legged friends and their roll during your Outer Banks beach portrait! We know it’s tradition for many of you to include your pups in your outer banks family session and we couldn’t be more stoked to be photographing them! I am personally a huge dog lover! If you follow my Instagram account @sarahdambraphoto you’ll find that while I’m all business and photography on my posts, my Insta stories are practically a play by play of both of my dogs at home each day! We love dogs and we LOVE having them accompany us during our outer banks beach portrait sessions. Here are a few tips to help you out if you’re thinking about brining your fur baby to the beach!

  1. VACATION HOME! Make sure you vacation rental is pet friendly! There’s nothing more frustrating than having to bored your pup here on the Outer Banks because you forgot to check if dogs were allowed in your rental home. Management companies are tuff on this rule so definitely do your research first!
  2. ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS! When bringing your pup to the beach make sure you’re aware of how hot the sand can be on their paws! Always carry them closer to the water if you can to make sure they don’t burn their precious little paws! You’ll also need to make sure you provide shade and water for them! The best rule of thumb is to KNOW YOUR PET! And when enough is enough bring them back inside to cool down 🙂 This is another advantage to shooting an hour before sunset — the heat isn’t nearly as intense as it is earlier in the day. This makes it great for your family and your pets.
  3. LEASH LAWS! Each township has different leash laws regarding dogs on the beach so make sure whatever town your in you’re abiding by those laws! This is also extremely helpful when bringing your pet along for your beach family photos. It’s never fun starting off your session after having had to run a mile down the beach to catch your dog! Always bring a leash!
  4. TREATS AND TOYS! It’s super helpful for us if you bring your own treats! In the past we provided them, but it just seemed like more and more often we were running into pet allergies, special diets, etc.. so we feel it’s best that you bring your own and we’ll happily give them out while we’re shooting your outer banks family session! Their favorite ball or squeaky toy isn’t a bad idea either!
  5. BEACH COMBERS! There are also far less people around on the beach during golden hour. If your dog doesn’t do so great amongst crowds of strangers then all the more reason for you bring them along for your session during that time in the evening.
  6. LEAVE IT TO US! We’ll make sure we get them to look! It’s best if you guys focus on us and let us get your dog’s attention! We’ll also make sure we get plenty of candids of them hanging out with their favorite humans!

Outer Banks Beach Portraits | Family Portraits | Nags Head, North Carolina

It’s January! And here I am writing a blog post about Outer Banks Beach Portraits. You’d think it’d be way too early to start talking about those, but it seems like our inquiries and reservations start earlier and earlier for family beach portraits each year. I wanted to share a few things as we enter 2019 on how to prep your family so that we can provide your group with the best outer banks beach portrait experience. Here are a few tips!

Keep in mind that we only photograph beach portrait sessions early in the morning or 1 hour before sunset. This is so the we can offer your family the absolute best lighting for photos. You have to remember there is NO SHADE on the beach whatsoever, the unbelievable number of rainbow umbrellas and beach tents lined up on the beach that can’t be magically photoshopped out, the heat and humidity can be unbearable, the squinting, the sweating, the sand sticking to you… sounds like a recipe for disaster right? These are just a few of the reasons why we insist on early morning (sunrise) or later in the evenings! The light is soft and pretty and the bulk of your beach combers have retreated for the day.  As a general rule, summer beach portraits are ideally shot around 7:00PM (depending on the month) We know this can be SO hard on your little guys as many of your kids have early bed times! So here are a few helpers to help you get through the evening beach portrait session:

  1. Don’t run your kids ragged the day of your photography session! ( I COULD NOT POSSIBLY STRESS THIS ENOUGH!) An all-day-beach-day in the heat and sun probably isn’t the best idea if you want happy smiles and good attitudes at 7:00PM.
  2. Plan ahead and NAP THEM UP! Trust me, you’ll want your little guys to be well rested so that way we can can shoot their photos first and get them out of the way incase we have any unplanned meltdowns! We always shoot the sub families with the most temperamental kids first (immediately after the large group photo) for this very reason!
  3. Bringing snacks or your kids favorite treat isn’t a bad idea either!!

This is YOUR investment, and we want this to be a fun and enjoyable experience for your family while you’re on vacation! With that being said: Leave all of your personal cameras and cellphones back at the vacation house! You won’t need them! Remember you’ve hired us to take the photos! And a big part of your beach portrait (once the formalities are over) is for us to be able to candidly capture you family at their most vulnerable and real selves… We won’t be able to do that when 6 people in your group have their cell phones or personal DSLR’s in their hand.

And finally the last thing I want to touch on is the type of photos we take and the overall flow of how you can expect your outer banks family portrait session to play out!

  1. Formalities first! (always!) We will always start with the traditional large group shot first! After that, we’ll break your group down into the individual sub families and shoot each of those.  And like we mentioned before, those of you with the youngest or most temperamental kids will go immediately after the large group photo!
  2. What we cover! You can expect us to photograph the traditional large group photo, the individual sub families, just the kids, the grandparents and the kids, (really whatever formal grouping you would like us to arrange) and then finally the last 20 mins of the session we photograph your more candid photos.
  3. Dunes, then water! The last thing we want is one of your kids to get wet before the session is over or before we’re ready for those photos. So we always work our way down from the dunes to the shore line.
  4. Finally the candids! Once our formalities are over we slide right into the candids! This is a variation of anything from walking down the beach, the kids playing or running, sand castle building, splashing, laughing, or just general silliness. You will find that we do often step in during this time as it’s important to us that you always look your best (and unfortunately candid and natural isn’t always photogenic) so we’re here to help prompt you look like your most natural self 🙂
